Campaign to encourage young people to obtain a diploma

BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2024-2025: A REGIONAL COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE TO OBTAIN A DIPLOMA

R3USSIR and Ensemble Sherbrooke are joining forces to raise awareness of the importance of graduating; whether it’s from high school, vocational training, college, or university.

Graduation has a positive impact on all aspects of someone’s life, as well as on society as a whole. With this in mind, from September 16 to November 10, 2024, R3USSIR and Ensemble Sherbrooke will be putting out hard-hitting content to raise awareness among students and parents of the importance of graduation. The campaign works to highlight the personal and emotional benefits of attaining a diploma.

COSTS AND IMPACTS OF SCHOOL DROPOUT ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN ESTRIE

School dropout has significant economic and social consequences for Estrie:

  • The economic cost of school dropout is estimated at up to $1.54 billion for the region each year.
  • For an individual who drops out, over the course of their career, this results in a loss of $560,668 in income compared to a person who holds a high school diploma (DES) or a vocational diploma (DEP).

As part of this diploma promotion campaign, R3USSIR has commissioned Frédéric Laurin, professor of economics at the Université du Québec à rois-Rivières and specialist in regional development, to measure the impacts of non-graduation on the socio-economic development of Estrie. More than ever, we must work together to ensure that our youth can persevere with the goal of obtaining their diploma.

Some statistics

70.8%

of adults in the region value a high school diploma for doing well in life.

13.6%

of the working population in Estrie does not hold a diploma. This proportion is higher than in Quebec (11.8%).

67%

of projected job openings will require a qualification by 2031.
